Toronto Streets have been captured by city photographers, photographic artists, and amateur photographer. However postcards provide a unique look back into time. Not only have they captured an image, but many in the collection were mailed, and as such are postmarked with a date and time “ time stamping “ the image. In addition some of the messages whether they be news, gossip, postcard pals, notes home offer a unique insight into the social history of the period.

The calm before the storm. in 1899 the Canadian Army returned from South Africa having defended Britain’s interests in the Boer War. Later this morning the streets would be filled with revellers celebrating the return of the Canadian Troops.
Toronto Island has been for decades a place for city dwellers to escape. The calm and serene surroundings with the bustling city and all of its troubles and burdens far off in the distance.
